Creature Mark

Project Brief

Graphically interpret a creature using fundamental elements of design to communicate a set number of unique physical, behavioral, and personality traits. Explore ways to retain meanings and qualities of a natural form while translating it into a graphic language.

Research

In the early stages of my project I researched, iterated, and experimented with a doberman instead of a shrimp. Through process work and working through the project I realized the doberman’s characteristics were too individualized for this project.

Sketches

Before I realized this creature would’t be successful I focused on the position and juxtaposition of the sleek/sharp and round traits of the doberman through my sketching process. Highlighting the confidence and intimidation, while still showing the lovability of dobermans. The use of contour drawing helped me simplify the complex characteristics of the doberman.

Pivot

Refinement

Most of my process work was defining little details making the design cohesive and purposeful. I already had the base form confirmed so little details were my focus.

Application

Creature Mark Applied

I realized details needed to be simplified, specifically the carapace which covers the thorax.

I realized the concept of this project wasn't on details, but the simplification of angles. Thus leading me to abandon the doberman and researching the shrimp due to its simplistic and moldable characteristics. With the pivot of my creature I only had a couple days to finish the project so some of the sketching process was unable to be done.
